Masko in Hermes Agent

Hermes Agent by Nous Research connects to Masko's MCP server and can then create a mascot, animate it and export the files. The tools work wherever Hermes runs: the terminal, or a chat app connected to its gateway such as Telegram or Discord.

Connect Masko

Hermes signs in to Masko, so nobody copies a key. Sign-in needs a recent Hermes, so run hermes update first.

  1. Add Masko to ~/.hermes/config.yaml:
mcp_servers:
  masko:
    url: "https://masko.ai/api/mcp"
    auth: oauth
  1. Run hermes mcp login masko. Your browser opens Masko's sign-in page.
  2. Choose the workspace whose credits Hermes will use and click Connect Masko. Hermes prints Authenticated and the number of tools.
  3. Start a new Hermes session so it loads the tools.

Hermes waits for Masko's answer on the computer that runs it, so open the page there. On a machine without a browser, paste the address the browser lands on into the Hermes prompt instead.

Generation spends the credits of the workspace you chose. Only a team owner or admin can connect a team workspace.

Check the connection

hermes mcp test masko

Hermes prints Connected and the number of tools it found. Change which tools are on at any time with hermes mcp configure masko.

Use an API key instead

  1. On masko.ai, open Developers → API keys, choose Create API key, name it Hermes and keep Read + Write. Copy the key: it is shown once.
  2. Run hermes mcp add masko --url https://masko.ai/api/mcp --auth header, answer Y when Hermes asks whether the server requires authentication, and paste your key. Hermes saves it in ~/.hermes/.env as MCP_MASKO_API_KEY.
  3. Press Enter to enable all of Masko's tools, then start a new Hermes session.

Ask before paid tools

Masko marks every tool that only reads as read-only. In Hermes versions that support server trust, add trust: untrusted under masko and Hermes asks before each tool that creates something or spends credits.

Try it

From the terminal:

hermes chat -q "Show my Masko credit balance. Don't generate anything."

Or ask in any Hermes chat:

  • "Show my Masko credit balance. Don't generate anything."
  • "Create a friendly owl mascot for my study app. Tell me the cost before generating."
  • "Animate the owl waving, then send me the WebM link."

What Hermes can do

  • Create a mascot, its poses and its animations.
  • Make talking animations and backgrounds.
  • Build a canvas, the mascot's states and the moments that switch between them.
  • Check a job until its files are ready, then export and publish them.
  • Read your credit balance and open a credit checkout link.

Costs

Generation uses credits from the Masko workspace you connected. Ask for the estimated cost before generating: the estimate tools return it before anything is spent. Reading, listing and checking jobs are free.

Limits

  • The connection allows 120 requests per minute.
  • New mascots made through the MCP server start with public CDN hosting off. Publish the mascot's assets before sharing CDN links.

Security

  • Hermes keeps its Masko sign-in in ~/.hermes/mcp-tokens on the machine that runs it. No Masko key is stored.
  • To remove access, run hermes mcp remove masko and disconnect Hermes Agent in Connected apps.
